Focus celebrates I-Day 2014 at the CMAG

By December 17, 2014Events

On Friday 5th December Focus hosted an I-Day celebration for people supported by Focus, friends, families, guardians and carers. Focus thanks Mary Porter AM MLA Member for Ginninderra ALP for sharing the day with us. Mary has been an Ambassador for Focus for many years and has organised seminars with families to talk about the needs of people with disability as they get older and believes the assistance provided by Focus’ genuinely helps people with disability live safely and with pride in their own homes.

Focus continues to support and facilitate a group called ‘Connections’ – people who receive support services from Focus. The purpose of this group is to develop skills and to nurture social links within the group and with the wider Canberra community. The I-Day event has become a tradition for Connections and all the family, friends, guardians and carers who support the group. It was a fun evening with lots of delicious food and wonderful people gathered to enjoy the Christmas spirit.

Focus would also like to thank Lynda McIntosh Chair of the Focus Supported Living Foundation (FSLF). This year’s I-Day event was generously sponsored by the Foundation that was established to provide opportunities for donations, sponsors and bequests to further the work of Focus ACT. Since it began in 2009, the Foundation has provided financial assistance for the people with intellectual disability who are supported by Focus.

Through the NDIS transition the Foundation will continue to play a very important role by helping people with small grants. This year the Foundation assisted two people with holidays; others with clothing; art classes and materials, gym memberships, season football tickets and new furnishings. The Foundation is independent from Focus ACT and governed by a separate volunteer Board of Directors. The Foundation works hard to attract sponsors; you can help by asking people or businesses to support the Foundation.
