Reflections from the Imagining Home Conference

Last week, our team had the privilege of attending the Imagining Home Conference hosted by Imagine More. Over two impactful days, the conference explored what it truly means to have a home, live independently, and build a life filled with belonging and connection.

The conference brought together people with lived experience, advocates, families, and organisations to share stories and challenge traditional ideas around housing and support for people with disability. Throughout the event, one message remained clear: home is about far more than simply having a roof over your head. It is about choice, identity, relationships, safety, and having control over your own life.

King of my Castle: Finding Home

One of the presentations that deeply resonated with our team was King of my Castle: Finding Home by Rob King and Jen Cush. Rob shared his journey of finding his own home after years of living within institutional settings, and the profound difference that having control over his own space, decisions, and future has made in his life.

The session highlighted something we strongly believe in as an organisation, that genuine support should empower people to live lives that are truly their own. A home should never feel like a service. It should feel personal, safe, familiar, and reflective of the person living there.

Rob and Jen also spoke about the importance of relationships and community in creating a meaningful home. Being connected, known, and respected within your local community creates a sense of belonging that cannot be replicated through systems alone. This is something we are actively continuing to strengthen in the way we support people by helping individuals build routines, connections, confidence, and opportunities that exist beyond the walls of their home.

Nurturing the Sanctity of Home

Another powerful session, Nurturing the Sanctity of Home and Building Belonging by Deb Rouget, explored how easily support environments can unintentionally become places where things are simply "done for" people, rather than spaces where people lead and direct their own lives.

This challenged us to continue reflecting on our own practices and ensure that the support we provide always protects the sanctity of home. We want the people we support to feel ownership over their spaces, their routines, their choices, and the direction of their lives. Our role is not to take over. It is to walk alongside people, listen, encourage, and support them in creating the life they want.

Attending conferences like Imagining Home helps shape and strengthen how we approach support every day. We are committed to applying what we have learned by continuing to promote independence, meaningful connection, and truly individualised support for the people we work with.

Because everyone deserves more than just a house. Everyone deserves a home.
